Using multi-banked noticeboards in limited school space

Multi-banked noticeboards provide several display panels within one installation. The additional capacity is useful only when people can find and reach each section. Check the actual panel mechanism, plan an understandable sequence and allow enough space for safe opening, reading and maintenance in the intended school location.

Understand the panel arrangement

Ask for a drawing that shows how the banks or panels are arranged and moved. Confirm which faces can carry notices, which remain visible when the unit is closed and how much space is needed to use the rear sections. Different products can use the same broad description while having quite different operating arrangements.

Measure the area available for the complete installation. Include the movement of each panel, the person reading it and the person changing notices. If users would need to step back into a circulation route to see an open section, reconsider the position or choose a simpler arrangement.

Give the panels a predictable order

For a staff development collection, the first visible panel might hold an index, with further panels grouped by term or subject. Label each section consistently and place frequently needed information where it requires the least manipulation. Avoid hiding urgent instructions behind a layer that only experienced staff know how to access.

Trial the arrangement with actual paper sizes before filling every surface. A dense collection can offer a large display area while remaining difficult to use. Ask someone unfamiliar with the board to locate a specific item and note where the labelling or sequence causes uncertainty.

Treat moving parts as part of the display

Follow the maker’s directions for opening, securing and loading the panels. Do not add accessories that obstruct hinges, runners or catches. When refreshing a section, remove old fasteners and confirm that papers are not caught between moving surfaces.

Set a routine inspection for looseness, sticking movement and damaged edges. Record the model and any special access or fixing instructions so maintenance does not depend on the memory of the original installer. Review whether all sections are still useful; an unused bank can often be simplified rather than filled with material merely to occupy the space.

Action checklist

  • Obtain a drawing of the panel mechanism.
  • Measure the full opening and reading space.
  • Use an index and predictable panel sequence.
  • Inspect moving parts during every display refresh.

Common questions

Should essential notices go on an inner panel?

Put information that people must find immediately in the most visible, easily reached position. Inner panels work better for supporting or less frequently consulted material.
