Planning a dual-surface school noticeboard
Dual noticeboards can combine two display areas or surfaces, but the term does not define a single construction. Confirm what the proposed board actually includes. Then allocate each part a clear purpose so that the additional surface reduces clutter and helps people find the information they need.
Establish what dual means for the board
A description of a dual noticeboard may refer to two usable faces, two different surface materials or a divided display. Request a drawing or specification that shows the exact arrangement. Check whether both parts can be used at the same time, how they are supported and whether opening or turning one section affects access to the other.
Measure the working envelope as well as the stored footprint. A board that fits neatly against a wall may need extra space when a panel is moved. Include nearby furniture, door movement and the standing position of the person updating it in this assessment.
Separate information by audience or lifetime
In a staff workroom, one section could hold the weekly timetable while another carries short-lived reminders. Give both sections their own heading and review date. This avoids a permanent calendar being covered by a temporary announcement and makes responsibility for the display easier to assign.
For a teaching board with different surfaces, plan a specific reason to use each. For example, attach source images to one area and write pupil observations on the adjacent area. Test the intended pins, magnets or pens on their correct surfaces before introducing the activity, and provide clearly labelled storage for each accessory.
Check the changeover routine
Ask a colleague to update the board using a realistic handful of notices. Watch whether they can reach the upper corners, keep loose papers under control and move any panels without needing to shift other furniture. Where a movable design is involved, use its own instructions for locking and handling.
Clean each surface according to its requirements rather than treating the whole unit with one product. Inspect hinges, catches or supports where fitted, and keep a simple replacement record for consumable backing or accessories.
Action checklist
- Confirm the exact two-surface arrangement.
- Measure the space needed during adjustment.
- Give each display area a defined purpose.
- Provide accessories matched to each surface.
Common questions
Can every dual noticeboard be written on?
No. Check the material of each section. A divided pinboard and a combined pinboard–writing board need different accessories and care.
