Planning activities with a yoga-position carpet
A yoga-position carpet can provide visual prompts within a planned school movement activity. The illustrations are not a substitute for appropriate instruction or individual participation arrangements. Review the images with the responsible teacher, choose suitable activities through the school’s normal procedures and check the floor area, alternatives and care requirements before use.
Review the pictures with the teaching plan
Inspect the positions actually illustrated and decide which, if any, fit the planned activity and group. A simplified picture may omit important instructions, so do not ask pupils to copy an unfamiliar position solely from the carpet. Use an appropriately competent teacher’s guidance and the school’s established approach to physical activity.
Consider individual needs and existing participation arrangements. Offer a suitable alternative activity or position where required. Avoid describing the carpet as a treatment or promising a particular effect on health, behaviour or concentration; its immediate role is to provide a visual reference for a supervised task.
Check space for the intended movements
Measure the floor area needed for the actual activity, including the space around each participant. Printed positions do not automatically define safe spacing. Remove nearby obstacles through the school’s normal setup process and check the carpet’s intended floor use and condition.
For a short lesson introduction, the teacher might choose a small number of familiar, appropriately taught movements and use the pictures to remind pupils of the sequence. Give clear opportunities to stop, ask questions or use an agreed alternative. Keep the focus on following the taught activity rather than completing every illustration on the carpet.
Reset the area and inspect the resource
Remove loose objects before and after the session. Follow the manufacturer’s placement and cleaning instructions and check edges, backing and surface condition as part of the setup. A resource used for movement may need a different room arrangement from the same carpet used for seated discussion.
Record which activities were planned and any practical adjustments needed through the school’s usual lesson process. Store supporting instructions where staff can find them. Review the arrangement when a new group uses the room, since familiarity with the pictures does not remove the need to assess the actual participants and space.
Action checklist
- Review printed positions with the responsible teacher.
- Use taught activities and individual participation arrangements.
- Measure movement space independently of printed positions.
- Inspect the floor resource and clear loose objects.
Common questions
Can pupils learn a new yoga position from the carpet alone?
Use appropriate instruction and the school’s activity-planning process. A printed illustration may omit details needed for a suitable supervised activity.
