Rest and sleep mats: choosing provision for older children
Rest mats may support an older child’s planned rest routine, but they are not interchangeable with infant sleep equipment. This guide helps settings review age suitability, individual needs and practical organisation. Use it alongside current national guidance, the setting’s sleep policy and the instructions for the particular equipment being considered.
Establish who the equipment is for
Identify the ages and needs of the children who will use the rest area. For England’s EYFS provision, guidance effective from 1 September 2026 requires babies aged 12 months and under to sleep in a cot, including the specified cot alternatives. A floor rest mat is not a substitute for that infant provision.
Review the rest environment
For older children, select equipment intended for their age and the planned use, following the setting’s sleep arrangements and relevant guidance. Consider the floor surface, clear space around each resting place, staff observation and emergency access. A comfortable-looking product does not by itself establish a suitable sleep setup.
Plan cleaning and storage
Choose covers and surfaces that can be cleaned according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Give each item a clear storage location and keep clean materials separate from those awaiting cleaning. Check for tears, loss of support or damage that affects use. Allow equipment to dry fully before stacking or enclosing it, and avoid storage that deforms the surface.
Keep routines individual and reviewable
Discuss the child’s routine with families through the setting’s agreed process and record relevant information securely. Do not force a child to sleep as a condition of participation; plan an appropriate quiet alternative within staffing arrangements. Follow the required supervision and checking procedures whenever a child sleeps. Review whether the setup remains suitable as children grow or their needs change. A simple inventory should record the intended users, instructions, condition and replacement needs, so staff can distinguish older-child rest resources from equipment approved for infant sleep.
Action checklist
- Confirm intended age and use
- Separate infant sleep provision from rest mats
- Check cleaning and drying instructions
- Follow the setting’s sleep supervision procedures
Common questions
Can a nursery rest mat replace a cot for a baby?
No. In England’s EYFS provision, the September 2026 guidance requires cot provision for babies aged 12 months and under; check the relevant rules for the setting.
