Planning PE storage trolleys and equipment routines
A well-planned storage routine can make physical education equipment easier to find, check and return. This guide helps staff match a trolley to the actual space and contents, then teach a clear collection routine. It focuses on practical organisation and manufacturer information rather than assuming every trolley suits every setting.
Audit the equipment and route
List the items that need to travel together and measure the storage opening and route to the teaching space. Consider thresholds, slopes, corners and floor surfaces. A trolley that fits the cupboard may still be awkward to manoeuvre elsewhere. Record which items are heavy, bulky or likely to roll away.
Check the specification for the task
Review the stated load capacity, intended use, wheel arrangement and any braking system. Follow the manufacturer’s loading and moving instructions. Place equipment so it remains secure and does not obstruct the operator’s view. Do not allow pupils to ride on a trolley or use it as play apparatus.
Teach a collection routine
Label compartments with words and pictures, and give each item a clear home. Set out a small collection point that avoids crowding. Pupils can collect manageable items under staff direction, while movement of loaded storage equipment remains with appropriately instructed users. Count equipment out where that helps the lesson run smoothly.
Build checking into return
Create a place for damaged or questionable items that need staff review before reuse. Return clean, dry equipment to the correct compartment and keep access routes clear. Ask whether the arrangement reduces searching and makes missing items visible. Adjust labels or grouping when the routine proves confusing. For inclusive access, place frequently used lightweight items within a comfortable reach and provide an alternative collection method where necessary. A successful system supports the next lesson as well as the end of the current one.
Action checklist
- Measure the complete travel route
- Check the stated load and use limits
- Label a home for each item
- Separate damaged items for review
Common questions
Should children move a fully loaded trolley?
Only arrangements consistent with the equipment instructions, school procedures and an appropriate assessment should be used; collecting individual manageable items is a separate task.
