Using floor cushions in school group areas

Floor cushions can help organise small-group reading, discussion or quiet activities. Check the intended users and provide suitable alternative seating. Compare cushion size, support, cover care and storage together, then trial the group layout so pupils can participate without the cushions gradually spreading across the room’s access routes.

Choose a cushion for a defined use

A cushion used briefly during a story is different from one expected to support a longer independent task. Trial the intended activity with representative users and observe whether they can reach materials, see the adult and change position comfortably. Seek appropriate advice for individual seating needs rather than assuming soft seating suits everyone.

Check the exact dimensions and construction, including any handle, removable cover or fastening. These details affect handling and care. Confirm the maker’s intended use and cleaning method before treating a cushion as suitable for an outdoor session or a wet activity area.

Plan places and participation

For a six-pupil discussion group, arrange cushions in a shallow arc around a shared image or book. Leave a clear position for a conventional chair where needed, and allow pupils to enter or leave without stepping over one another. Ask whether all participants can see the shared material from their usual position.

Use a simple collection routine, such as a counted stack in a suitable storage unit. Avoid assigning spaces solely through colour; words, pictures or a clear group instruction can make the arrangement easier to understand. Keep cushions separate from materials that may leave sharp fragments or stains.

Inspect, clean and reset

Follow the care instructions for both cover and filling. If covers are removable, keep track of which components belong together and check that they are fully ready before reassembly. Inspect seams, fastenings and the cushion’s overall condition during collection.

Plan enough storage for the actual stack, with access that does not require pupils to pull items from an unstable pile. Remove damaged or heavily soiled cushions from the ordinary set until addressed. Review how frequently the cushions are used and how long cleaning takes, so the quantity selected supports a workable rotation rather than leaving the group short after a spill.

Action checklist

  • Trial the intended activity with representative pupils.
  • Provide alternative seating and clear entry space.
  • Confirm care instructions for cover and filling.
  • Count and inspect cushions during collection.

Common questions

How many floor cushions should a group area hold?

Base the quantity on the group arrangement and cleaning rotation. Extra cushions are useful only if they have suitable storage and do not crowd the activity space.
