Display trimmers for headings, frames and clear sections
Display trimmers can frame a whole board or define a smaller section. Decide which role is needed before cutting. A few well-positioned strips can help pupils follow the information, while repeated decorative dividers may make a board harder to scan and update.
Choose a framing or dividing role
A perimeter trimmer establishes the outer boundary; an internal strip can separate stages or themes. Avoid using both heavily unless the information requires it. Compare the trimmer profile and pattern with the actual cards. A strong decorative edge may work around an exhibition but compete with small labels on a frequently changing working wall.
Lay out a sequence of learning
Ask pupils to arrange four cards showing a process they have studied, such as planning, making, testing and improving a model. Try a single frame around the sequence, then compare it with a divider between every card. Pupils explain which arrangement makes the order clearer. Add numbered headings or arrows where the sequence matters rather than expecting decoration alone to communicate direction.
Fit strips to real content
Leave room for titles and for a replacement card that may be slightly larger than the original. Check corners before final fixing and use the board's approved installation method. Keep any internal strip far enough from handwriting that it does not appear to underline or interrupt a pupil's sentence. Offer a table-level version of the sequence for close viewing and discussion.
Keep offcuts useful
Store substantial lengths straight or gently coiled according to the material, with the pattern visible. Group matching offcuts together and label them by approximate usable length. Small pieces can frame a title or a tabletop sign, but discard damaged fragments rather than keeping every scrap indefinitely. Review what teachers actually reuse and set a sensible minimum offcut size for the shared cupboard.
Action checklist
- Choose perimeter framing or internal division deliberately.
- Use numbers or arrows when order matters.
- Leave space for replacement work of different sizes.
- Group matching offcuts by usable length.
Common questions
Can trimmers be used inside a display?
Yes, when they clarify a genuine division. Test whether a heading and extra spacing would communicate the same structure more simply.
