Display packs: checking a complete board kit

A display pack is convenient only when it contains what the planned board requires. Check the actual materials, measure the board and identify any missing labels or fixings. Trial the layout before cutting so that the pack supports the display rather than dictating how much work can be shown.

Unpack against a measured board

List each component and compare it with the board's area and perimeter. A backing, a decorative border and a set of accents do different jobs; an abundance of one does not compensate for a shortage of another. Confirm current contents directly and check the appropriate fixing arrangements. Keep packaging information until the materials have been identified and stored.

Plan a one-board project

For a class poetry display, arrange a sample title, several poem cards and a short explanation of the writing task. Mark their positions on a paper plan, then allocate the pack's materials. Ask pupils whether all the writing has enough space and whether the decorative pieces add useful emphasis. Revise the layout before cutting the backing into sections that cannot be rejoined neatly.

Check what the pack leaves to staff

Allow for mounting card, readable labels, preparation time and access to approved installation equipment. Offer varied ways for pupils to contribute, including dictated captions or enlarged work. Do not reduce a pupil's writing just to fit an unexpectedly small decorative space; change the layout or the material allocation. Keep the board's main message readable from its normal viewing distance.

Label partial packs honestly

After use, note which components and useful lengths remain. Store them with the pack's identifying information or return general materials to clearly labelled shared stock. Keep a photograph of the successful layout and a short list of additional supplies required. When planning the next display, decide whether targeted replacements will complete the remaining materials rather than automatically opening a new full pack.

Action checklist

  • Measure area and perimeter before allocating components.
  • Lay out real sample work before cutting.
  • List missing fixings, labels and mounting materials.
  • Record exactly what remains in a partial pack.

Common questions

What should staff check first in a display pack?

Check whether the backing and border cover the measured board. Then confirm the other supplies and preparation steps needed for the actual pupil work.
